History of Dalaguete City, Cebu
"What's the name of this place?" asked, according to the folklore, a group of curious Spanish soldiers who first chanced upon some women washing clothes where grew giant dalakit trees, who replied, "Dalakit, Dalakit." Thus was christened this municipality of Dalaguete. As to the establishment of centuries - old buildings and structures here, dates maybe perceived indelibly etched on their facades and walls. For instance, the Catholic Church and Convent in 1832, the Municipal Building thereabouts, a cota or fort (now the "Kiosko"), in 1768, and there the 100 year-old ancestral homes of the Almagros and Osorios.
From a handful of inhabitants when Magellan and Legaspi's soldiers first ventured into our municiplaity, the population of Dalaguete has exploded to a whooping 50,000 souls.
Dalaguete today, is a far cry from Dalaguete of yore or of centuries ago, after having gone through baptisms of blood and fire and different domination of administrations: Spanish, Americans, Japanese, and others, and for a couple of months after the WWII, America from whom we finally attained our independence in 1946 or 59 years ago. This town's administration has passed through the hands of 11 Municipal Executives called Presidentes then and now Mayors from the 1913 to the present. Also, the Catholic Parish has changed hands 27 times since 1798 to its 29th, the Rev. Fr. Maximino Villamor,(incumbent).
The Poblacion is now a beehive of business while Brgy. Mantalongon, some 14 kms. towards the mountains is bustling with commerce as traditional farming have given way to more scientific methods, enormously boosting economic profits.
